In 2023, GES Tech Group joined a team that was contracted to provide a mass concrete thermal control plan for an office building in San Francisco, California. GES specified adiabatic cube tests for a series of trial concrete mixes, resulting in the selection of a mix that would comply with ACI heat of hydration criteria without the application of active cooling measures.
Placing temperatures, typical for San Francisco, and a selection of blanket insulation levels were provided to the contractor, along with recommended monitoring procedures.
Recommendations included maximum allowable differential temperatures in order to minimize the risk of thermal induced cracking.
