In 2012, GES Tech Group and LJ Mott were retained to provide a design review of piping expansion and contraction compensation provisions for the new Union Station Reginal Transportation District. It was determined that the anchors, guides and restraints in the system were inadequate. Hydrostatic testing prior to starting up the steam, hot water and chilled water systems resulted in excessive piping deflection due to missing anchors and guides. Incorrect expansion compensator and anchor orientations also contributed to distress in the systems. GES Tech Group was requested to review and revise the anchorage design for the entire steam, hot water and chilled water mechanical systems. GES Tech Group worked closely with the mechanical contractor to implement recommended changes and a final inspection was performed to confirm compliance with ASME B31.1 and B31.9 code provisions.
