AISC Verification of MES Non-linear Results

The AISC, American Institute for Steel Construction, provides procedures for the verification of  computer based structural analysis programs.  These are contained in AISC 360-10/16/22 Chapter C and  include benchmark problem descriptions under Figures C-C2.2 and C-C2.3.  In both cases, the iterative non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) program considers axial, flexural, and shear deformations.

C-C2.2, case 1, covers a simply supported beam-column subject to an axial point load concurrently with a uniform load.  This case contains only P-delta’ effects (gravity loads action on member deflections) because there is no translation of one end of the beam relative to the other.

C-C2.3, case 2, is a fixed base cantilevered beam-column subject to an axial load concurrent with a lateral load at the top.  This case contains both P-delta’ and P-delta effects.  P-delta effects include gravity loads acting on lateral displacements.

Confirmation of an iterative non-linear analysis procedure includes verification of both moments and deflections.  Deflections are presented here based on Autodesk Mechanical Event Simulation software (MES) that considered isometric steel properties in a non-linear formulation.  Moments were also verified, confirming MES compliance with AISC code provisions.
