AISC Verification of MES Non-linear Results

The AISC, American Institute for Steel Construction, provides procedures for the verification of  computer based structural analysis programs.  These are contained in the AISC Specifications as benchmark problem descriptions under Figures C-C2.2 and C-C2.3.

C-C2.2, case 1, covers a simply supported beam-column subject to an axial point load concurrently with a uniform load.  This case contains only P-delta effects (gravity loads action on member deflections) because there is no translation of one end of the beam relative to the other. P=delta’ effects axial gravity loads acting on member displacements.

C-C2.3, case 2, is a fixed base cantilevered beam-column subject to an axial load concurrent with a lateral load at the top.  This case contains both P-delta’ and P-delta effects.  Confirmation of an iterative non-linear analysis procedure includes verification of both moments and deflections.  Deflections are presented here based on Autodesk Mechanical Event Simulation software (MES) applying isometric steel properties in a non-linear formulation.  Moments were also verified, confirming MES compliance with the AISC code
