RETROFITTING STRUCTURAL STEEL FLOOR SYSTEMS

EXPANSIVE CLAY SOILS (BENTONITE) UNDER SLABS ON GRADE CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE.  THE SOLUTION IS THE INSTALLATION OF A STRUCTURAL FLOOR SYSTEM TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL SLAB ON GRADE.

PRIOR TO REMOVAL OF THE ORIGINAL SLAB, THE CONCRETE BASEMENT WALLS MUST BE SHORED AGAINST MOVEMENT

SLAB IS REMOVED AND THE LOWER LEVEL EXCAVATED TO 3 FEET BELOW ORIGINAL GRADE.  EXPOSURE OF CONSTRUCTION DEFECTS ARE REVEALED.  NOTE SPECIAL SHORING REQUIRED DUE TO DEFECTIVE COLUMN AND PIER ALIGNMENT AND SUBSEQUENT DETERIORATION.  THESE DEFECTS WERE DISCOVERED JUST PRIOR TO INITIATION OF COLLAPSE OF THE MAIN LEVEL INTO THE BASEMENT DUE TO FAILURE OF THESE TWO COLUMNS.
